The scientific journal Media & Jornalismo, published by ICNOVA – NOVA Communication Institute, has opened a new call for papers for its volume 26, issue 49 (2026), entitled “Building the Algorithmic Audience: Shifting Paradigms in Communications, Media, and Democracy”, dedicated to analysing how algorithms are transforming the conceptualisation and construction of audiences in the digital public sphere.
The issue is edited by researchers from the Novos Medios research group, Berta García Orosa (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela) and Noel Pascual Presa (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela), in collaboration with Inês Amaral (University of Coimbra). This call for papers invites the submission of original and interdisciplinary research examining the role of artificial intelligence, big data and algorithmic systems in the production, distribution and personalisation of information.
The call particularly welcomes papers addressing topics such as automated journalism, audience micro-segmentation, algorithmic bias, transparency and accountability of recommendation systems, as well as the democratic, ethical and regulatory implications of algorithm-mediated personalisation. Comparative studies, research on youth audiences, media literacy and new methodologies for analysing hyper-segmented audiences are also encouraged.
The deadline for article submissions is 30 April 2026, and papers may be submitted in English, Spanish or Portuguese through the journal’s platform. Articles will be published on a rolling basis between September and December 2026.
